HORTICULTURE TEAM (PLANT PRODUCTION)


Position Overview


Gayle Gardens is seeking an experienced, passionate Horticulture Team Member for the 2026 season to oversee and support all aspects of plant production at our 3.2-acre retail nursery in West Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard. Gayle Gardens works to support our island's various ecosystems; to this end, we aim to grow as many of our plants from seed as possible, with an emphasis on locally adapted and genetically diverse plants for use in restoration, landscaping, and retail nursery sales.


This position is essential for fulfilling our mission of restoring native ecosystems, supporting innovative soil health practices, and serving as a vital resource for our community. The Horticulture Team will work closely with the Nursery Production Manager and year-round staff to foster a sacred relationship between people and the natural environment.


Job Responsibilities

  • Crop Production: Perform essential duties including sowing, thinning, transplanting, pruning, and weeding.

  • Inventory & Maintenance: Monitor irrigation schedules, fertilizing needs, and pest/disease conditions while re-organizing nursery stock as needed.

  • Order Fulfillment: Assist in putting together plant orders and loading delivery vehicles safely and efficiently.

  • Nursery Infrastructure: Maintain the organization and cleanliness of the greenhouse, outdoor areas, and equipment.

  • On-Site Activities: Participate in site preparation, maintenance, and native planting activities across the property.

  • General Operations: Work cross-functionally with all staff to ensure effective communication and represent Gayle Gardens’ mission by educating visitors about ecological design.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 1–3+ years of experience in botany, greenhouse production, horticulture, or a related field.

  • Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of native plants, annuals, perennials, and organic practices.

  • Physical Ability: Ability to perform physical work (standing, bending, kneeling) and lift 50+ lbs. in all weather conditions.

  • Soft Skills: Consistent attention to detail, positive leadership skills, and the ability to work independently or collaboratively under pressure.

  • Requirements: Weekend availability is required; a valid driver’s license is preferred.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $20.00 – $25.00 per hour, depending on experience.

  • Schedule: Seasonal, full-time (approx. 40 hours/week). Shifts are primarily M-F, 8:00am – 4:00pm, with occasional weekend work.
