Summer Wildlife/Conservation Internship
BiodiversityWorks summer interns volunteer 8-16hrs/week, and are designed for high school/college students exploring careers focused on the natural world.
These positions are ideal for students interested in building skills and gaining experience in a conservation science career such as conservation biology, environmental studies, wildlife biology, or ecology who want to volunteer a few hours a week.
Internship Description: Summer interns work alongside our staff biologists and naturalists on monitoring and research projects, and within our Natural Neighbors and MV Atlas of Life programs learning about the wildlife we study and acquiring necessary skills.
Duties include:
- Monitoring and protecting nesting piping plovers, least and common terns, black skimmers and American oystercatchers and sharing information about these birds with the public.
- Assisting with bat monitoring and research initiatives (acoustics and mist-netting).
- Assisting with reptile and amphibian initiatives (monitoring, trapping and/or radio-telemetry).
- Assisting in all our current wildlife programs (varies from year to year).
- Spending time with team leads in our Natural Neighbors and MV Atlas of Life program.
- Entering data in a spread sheet or google docs.
- Making maps and posters about current projects.
- Participating in our annual summer gathering.
- Qualifications:
- A strong environmental and conservation ethic as well as an interest in wildlife.
- A passion for learning and building skills in wildlife biology and or conservation.
- Ability to communicate through email at home or via smart phone
- A driver’s license and transportation OR some form of reliable transportation to our office in Vineyard Haven
- Must be physically able to walk in sand for up to 1 mile, and carry up to 20 lbs.
- Must be able to work for 3 -4 hours outdoors in the summer heat with potential exposure to biting insects and ticks. We provide insect repellent and safety training.
- Basic computer skills (M.S. word, excel and internet browsing)
- Preference will be given to Martha’s Vineyard year-round residents.
